Balcony Cafe

There are some buildings that I return to time and time again because they just appeal to me so much. This is the Balcony of the Backstage Cafe – part of the Backstage Boutique Hotel above the Cinema in the centre of Zermatt.

Click here and here to see two previous posts of this balcony. Depending on the weather there are some wonderful reflections to be seen in these floor-to-ceiling windows, but on this most recent occasion, on a cloudy day, I particularly liked the minimalist feel of the scene.

Do click on the image to see an enlargement, the image really comes to life if you do that.

About LensScaper

Hi - I'm a UK-based photographer who started out 45+ years ago as a lover of landscapes, inspired by my love of outdoor pursuits: skiing, walking and climbing. Now retired, I seldom leave home without a camera and I find images in unexpected places and from different genres. I work on the premise that Photography is Art and that creativity is dependent on the cultivation of 'A Seeing Eye'.

It really is a fine image, and one of the most unusual blue-and-brown photos I’ve seen this year.
I thought at first that I spotted your signature at the bottom right. Then, I saw the repetition and thought it was inscriptions on the table. I finally figured out that it’s one signature per glass panel — perhaps the name of the restaurant?

Soft colours really do work don’t they, and make a welcome break from full-on saturation. The signature is of Heinz Julen – the architect and designer of this place and a number of other buildings in Zermatt and the surrounding area. He’s a very talented man with extraordinary vision.

I remember well your previous images of this interesting building Andy. This does not disappoint.

Thanks Adrian. We’ve had coffee inside here – although not on the balcony – and been to the cinema in the basement. Heinz Julen is a superb designer. The Julen family is one of the very long-established Zermatt families with fingers in a great many pies. We’ve stayed in the Julen Hotel and I’ve climbed with Paul Julen.

Yes, it has a great minimalist feel, but you framed and toned it perfectly! Lovely light and orderliness.
