The Langdale Pikes

This view up the popular Langdale valley is a classic image of the Lake District. The silhouette of the Langdale Pikes in the right half of the picture is visible from a wide area to the SE of the Lake District and is unmistakable to those familiar with the area. In the left half of the image are Crinkle Crags and in the centre Bow Fell. Walk up beyond them and you will eventually reach Scafell and Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain at 978M or 3,209ft).

The dominant craggy mountain on the right of the image is Harrison Stickle – the highest of the Langdale Pikes. To its left is the more rounded lines of Pike of Stickle, which from some viewpoints is distinctly thimble-shaped. A slightly different view was posted last Autumn. Click here to view that post.

We had a wet week in the Lakes last week, but there was one dry day with blue sky and sun and we made the most of it, visiting this beautiful valley. I’ve come home with just under 300 new images – so despite rain there were opportunities to gather images and the Autumnal colours were beautiful. Some of those images will be posted over the next few weeks.

The slopes of these peaks are covered in Bracken (a large coarse fern that grows to waist height). It’s not fun wading through, but in Autumn it colours the mountains in golds and browns and oranges. The perfect time of year for a photograph.
