Putting one’s feet up

As we get older, any little niche is good for a sit down. This is round the back of St Martin in the Fields church, Trafalgar Square, Central London. No fields near here at all, although I assume when this was built (and a church has stood on this site since medieval times) that there were fields close by.

About LensScaper

Hi - I'm a UK-based photographer who started out 45+ years ago as a lover of landscapes, inspired by my love of outdoor pursuits: skiing, walking and climbing. Now retired, I seldom leave home without a camera and I find images in unexpected places and from different genres. I work on the premise that Photography is Art and that creativity is dependent on the cultivation of 'A Seeing Eye'.

An interesting gentleman and photo. The smartphone he is so focused upon seems in opposition to his sightly passé appearance.

Thanks Earl for that perceptive comment. Yes, he’s slightly incongruous isn’t he. London is such a busy place, but move a few yards off the main streets and there are quiet corners. He’s found one of those quiet places.

  3. I especially like the limited and muted color palette—except for his sock!

I see a lot of confidence in this gentleman from this photo. NIcely done, Andy.

We want to know more about him, don’t we? He strikes me as being a man who doesn’t much care what others think of him – and that may imply self-confidence.

This is a delightful photo. Despite looking rather like a grasshopper, he seems entirely comfortable, and the gradations of gray, along with the algae, adds just the right amount of color. Not only that, he seems to be a very interesting man. I have no idea why I think so, except that your photo makes him so.

There’s something about him – that ‘je ne sais quoi’ that we can’t quite put into words. Is he aristocratic, eccentric. I liked the little snatches of colour. I was tempted to convert to B&W but I thought that would weaken the image rather than strengthen it. Sometimes a little bit of colour punches way above its weight.

I like this so much, Andy. I think what appeals, aside from a very nice composition and all, is that it shows an older man who obviously doesn’t care a huge deal about appearances, but does care to keep up-to-date by using a smartphone. It’s a nice blending of things that don’t always go together. The location makes me think of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, too. 😉 All good!

Thanks Lynn. This man seems to have intrigued quite a few people. It’s one of those unexpected images that ‘happen’ when I take a different route through an area of London that I know so well. Quiet corners can be more rewarding than busy streets.
