Our recent day out on the south coast started with sea mist and sea fog. It hung around into the afternoon and then finally started to clear so we took the scenic route home along the coast and near Beachy Head were treated to shafts of mellow light piercing the cloud base and lighting up the water. Subtle light that lasted just long enough for me to find a place to park and grab the camera. Not the greatest of images, but a memory preserved. Job done.

You’ve done a fine job of capturing not only the obvious beams of light, but also the more subtle layers and pools. Fog can be featureless — no question about that. But this fog isn’t, and it’s obvious from your photo. It’s really beautiful (says this inveterate fog-lover).

The light was fleeting and subtle as I was driving and searching for a place to pull off the road. It was one of those days when fog look set to linger on into dusk, and then suddenly things began to clear. I like the way fog can reduce the world to two dimensions, we haven’t had a good fog for quite a while

Speaking of interesting phenomena, look at this short video of sea smoke on the Gulf of Mexico. We’ve been really, really cold, and the water of the bays is even colder than the Gulf. I’m hoping for some sea fog this weekend, and already am thinking about places from which to capture it — if it comes.

Thanks Heide. The algorithm that WP uses to reduce the size of images does a poor job, in my opinion. When you enlarge an image there is a huge boost in clarity and detail.

Not often! The light must have been patchy out on the far horizon. It was a very unexpected, but welcome, end to the day.
