Seeing Differently in October

Robyn of RobynsFineArt issued a challenge – The Seeing Differently Challenge – at the beginning of October to find 15 different images in October.

I am late arriving at the party but I decided to post a complete gallery of my 15 at the month’s end.

I have been using my iPhone a lot more recently, partly because I am using it to capture Autumn, and partly because I have been carrying it instead of a compact. So the first decision I made that the ‘difference’ would be that all the images in the 15 would be shot on the iPhone. Some, but not all of these, have been posted on my Instagram account: ‘andyhooker’.

Eleven of the fifteen were shot within a five-minute walk of our house (one within it – the chair back). The other four come from Horsham town centre.

October has been very dry and warm and that combination has helped the Autumn colours to develop and it has been a joy to capture them. On a daily basis I walk to the nearest small supermarket to pick up the morning paper along a small stream (brook) that is almost silent – the water at a very low ebb. There is always something new to see – a reflection, the leaves in or on the water, and the occasional foreign object.

A challenge or a project always encourages our photography. It concentrates the mind and sharpens the eye. The Art of Seeing is a skill that we cultivate, but just as with plants, cultivation never ends. Plants die if they are not looked after. Our Eye loses its focus if we don’t practice our craft.
