Ridge Line

In the mountains, the light never seems to be the same from one day to the next. That is especially true early in the morning, when low-lying cloud and valley mist  start to clear and brief gaps allow the sun to shine through.

DSC_0256_NikThis is part of the long undulating summit ridge of the Breithorn in the Valais Alps in 2008. The conditions on that particular morning saw the light pick out that ridge line to perfection. I’ve never again seen it quite like this.

About LensScaper

Hi - I'm a UK-based photographer who started out 45+ years ago as a lover of landscapes, inspired by my love of outdoor pursuits: skiing, walking and climbing. Now retired, I seldom leave home without a camera and I find images in unexpected places and from different genres. I work on the premise that Photography is Art and that creativity is dependent on the cultivation of 'A Seeing Eye'. I'm not averse to manipulating images to produce derivatives that may sometimes be far removed from the original.

    Stunningly beautiful Andy!

  2. WOW! This one just stopped me dead in my tracks! That is superb Andy 🙂

What a glorious photo. The play of light on the undulations is remarkable.

And I must confess — I could use a little of that snow. This entire week is going to be ghastly working weather, with temps hitting around 33C and heat indices around 43C. I’d rather be up on your ridge!

I love the diagonal horizon line. It makes for sure a dramatic composition.

The drama very often comes with the territory, Ken. There was a lot more of the foreground snow slope I was traversing – the drama needed the letter box shape just to isolate that line of interest

    Indeed,beautiful….

Your description is so very appropriate – beautiful light on the ridge – a wonderful image.

Thanks very much Alan. This was about 8am – not that early in mountaineering terms. A short climb acccessible from the first uplift of the day along with a load of Summer skiers.

Really digging this Andy. The way the edge of the mountain is backlit is crazy good.
