The weather forecast ‘promised’ snow overnight. But whatever fell from the skies overnight was not snow but rain. The forecasters were wrong as they often are in predicting accurately where precipitation will fall as snow or rain.
I glanced back through the archive this morning to see what had happened on this particular date in previous years and found an image of a sharp frost on 14 Jan 2009, and here is the evidence from that day five years ago on the roof of the car.

This really is delightful. The variation in color and texture among the three bands (ribbon-like, actually) is delightful. In a sense, the image itself is an illustration of what makes weather forecasting so difficult. Even the slightest difference in conditions can bring a different result.

Thank You Linda. Yes, frost is very fickle and it can disappear so rapidly too. I did actually take an image of Hoar Frost on the car about a week ago. I spotted it on my way to walk to fetch the paper, and thought: I’ll take a look at that when I get back’. Ten minutes later when I returned half the frost was gone and I just had time to take an image or two before the magic completely disappeared. Maybe I’ll post that on Friday. The other point I liked about the image today was the minimalism implicit in those bands of textures.

One thing I’ve noticed in many of your photos is that you are not afraid to crop to an unconventional ratio to maximize an effect. This is a good example.
If you would like to see more frost, I can guarantee frost daily for the next 3 months here.

Some very cold weather out your way recently I hear, Ken. I don’t mind cold weather, but three months solid would be an overdose I think! I’ve always considered that there is nothing sacrosanct about the ratio of the original image and I crop to get the effect and the composition that I want. Many thanks for your comment, Ken.

Super image Andy! I love the colours and texture which of course this sort of image is all about! Crazy thunder and lightening for us last night, horrendous hail showers but no snow.. Torrential rain and gale force winds now. Same old same old.. just hoping we don’t have a repeat of last years storms.

From the forecast I hear you are in for some rough weather, Adrian – hope the roof stays on. There is something to be said for living almost dead centre of the country – by the time the weather gets here it has lost a lot of its strength usually (says he clutching wood). Thanks for the comment – no new images at the moment so I’m finding some to suit the season from the archive.

You’d have no idea this was a car roof Andy ! I do like the three contrasting textures in the *striped areas . Ice chips to spots .
We DID have snow on the Hills but with a wild downpour and winds last night it’s all disappeared now of course ! More weather to come I gather …

Thanks Poppy. We seem to be heading into a much colder spell – the Daily Express (well known for its hysterical headlines) warns it will be the worst for years. Wouldn’t mind a bit of snow for a day or two, then I will get tired of it.

Great shot Andy. I love the layered effect. I must agree with your comments about the weather forecast. Lately they have been way out. Maybe they should ditch the supercomputer and go back to using pine cones and seaweed 😉

Thanks James. Supercomputers may be very clever, but only as clever as the code they use for their calculations. We are a long way off accurate forecasting.
