Behave

Trafalgar Square in Central London is home to Nelson’s column, iconic Lions, fountains, the fourth plinth and….pigeons. Hundreds if not thousands of pigeons.

They sit everywhere and they do what all birds do – poop.

I saw the stare of this figure and I saw the pigeon that had decided that the figure’s outstretched arm would make the perfect perch. I imagined the figure saying –‘You can only sit there if you behave and promise not to poop all over my arm’.

Maybe the artist would have preferred it this way… But I can’t help wonder if it wouldn’t have been a better picture with the poop included.

The statue’s eyes fit in with a pigeon on its arm Andy.

I agree with you, Andy. Sometimes we have to determine what amount of bird poop is acceptable. Excellent shot.

I started feeding the doves, blue jays and sparrows, and now I have pigeons. If only I had a clone tool for my balcony railing! It’s a wonderful photo. If you were coming at the subject as a photojournalist (“The Scourge of Statuary Poop!”), of course it should have stayed. For an artistic rendering of the scene, I say, “Clone away!”

Thanks Linda. This is definitely an artistic viewpoint. The title came with the image. The pigeon took a little while before he decided to look in the right direction.

I think I appreciate the poop-removal. But any time I see the word “Behave” associated with London I can think of nothing but Austin Powers. Cheers!

Great processing Andy! 🙂 If only it would work in real life. We could have poop free parks.
