This is the time of year when we watch the forecast and make the most of the good days. So, two days ago, with a sunny afternoon promised we made our annual spring pilgrimage to Rousham to enjoy the gardens.
I’ve written about Rousham before – here. It’s a very special place and not a lot of people know about it. It’s always quiet, no children allowed. It’s tranquil and peaceful and beautifully green
I decided I would take the Mirror Lens plus two other lenses. So the camera bag was filled, the tripod made a rare appearance, and off we went on the forty minute drive, periodically scanning the sky to see if the weather man had got it right. All was well.
We bought the tickets, parked the car and wandered into the gardens. We had timed it right, the espaliers were still blossoming. I opened the camera bag. Where was the camera? Lenses there, but no camera. ‘You must have left it in the car’ my wife said. Of course. I hurried back to the car – no camera. And then I remembered – the camera was separate. It was left out of the bag to leave room for the lenses. And it was still at home on the table. Fortunately there was no-one within earshot to hear my observations!
I re-joined my wife who informed me that I was a ‘sandwich short of a picnic’. Slang for not quite all there – implying a ‘Senior’ moment. When we had got over that little crisis we established that I had brought my iPhone with me. ‘Try taking some images with that,’ she suggested. And so I did. And they turned out rather better than I had expected.
So here is a gallery of Rousham, thanks to an iPhone . The shots I like the best are the two of the Rill – that little tiny stream that sinuously winds its way down a woodland path and is one of the memorable features of the wooded area. So – not a complete disaster after all. It was still an enjoyable afternoon.

How infuriating Andy! Still, the iPhone gave you some nice pictures. I bet you’re still kicking yourself. I know I would be. BTW medically speaking, how old do you have to be to have a senior moment ‘cos I’m having them all the time.. 🙂

Infuriating is the right word. I just take these moments on the chin nowadays. Getting really mad with oneself only adds ten or more points to the BP! As for senior moments I am sure the answer is it’s a classic bell-shaped distribution curve. That tells you a lot, I’m sure!! I reassure myself it’s just plain simple forgetfulness rather than anything else. My real memory is still spot-on.

That iPhone really does come in handy when we make a mistake. I still shake my head on how good the photos come out of that tiny lens as you have proven.

Yes indeed. Such a tiny lens really shouldn’t produce images as good as it does.

Last year I went on my hike, got out the camera and found it had a dead battery. Also, the spare battery was dead. But I remember that day every time I pick up the camera bag. Unless I have a senior moment.

They do say that the best camera is the one you have with you. It happens to the best of us Andy. It would seem my senior moments are now occurring daily 🙂
