Beauty in the Detail

We are half way through November and in my central area of the UK, Autumn is not yet through as today’s images (all taken on 15 Nov) show.

I’ve said it before, and I will continue to say it: there is beauty in the detail. In a single leaf, or a cluster of leaves. In the fallen and the yet to fall. In the canopy and at low level. In the perfect and the imperfect. The diseased, decayed and rotten. In the variegation. Each tree and shrub has its own personal Autumn apparel that it wears with pride.

These first two images are of the Smoke Bush (Cotinus Coggygria) that grows at our front gate, which shows an extraordinary palette of colour in Autumn.

The remaining ten were all taken in a fifty-minute short walk through Campbell Park in Milton Keynes.

Enjoy them. Click on the first image in the gallery and then navigate through, or click on a single image for an enlargement.

Lovely light in these Andy. I’ve always been one for getting up at dawn to enjoy the quality of light at that time of day. The light at this time of year throughout the day mirrors that to a large extent and the late afternoon light is exceptional. Of course that light relies on it not being uniformly dull and overcast as it has been in Cornwall this last week.. 😉

This was ‘late’ afternoon, meaning close to 3pm – I thought the sun would go, but amazingly it didn’t sink into a cloud bank. It does make it a little difficult to get the translucency without getting the sun or flare in the picture too.

I love the shadow on the leaf in the first picture… and all of them are beautiful… Autumn is so very beautiful. I’m not so aware of when it’s supposed to happen according to the calendar… and when winter is fully here. I suppose I wait for nature itself to issue notice.

The details in these leaves are super Andy. Autumn has abandoned us here in New England. I wish our season was a bit longer. I am glad you are still shooting there.

Thanks very much for your comments, James. You are absolutely right about the beauty. Looks like we are set for another fine day down here, and so I will be back out with the camera later.

What can I say, George. Thank you so much for all those individual comments. This is one of my little obsessions – getting in close to the beauty of a leaf in Autumn They are all so different. The vibrant leaves here are Dogwood, you spotted the Oak and Maples including the Field Maple with rounded points to its leaves. And we mustn’t forget the Smoke Bush at my front gate which is a kaleidoscope of colours in Autumn. Those two images of it were taken one after the other. All these were finished off in Topaz Adjust and Topaz Detail. I have a quote for you: ‘The eyes are the scouts of the heart.’ – Joseph Campbell – American writer, author and mythologist. That’s one of the best quotes I’ve come across in quite some time.

This is a very nice collection. And for me especially the first one in the gallery – that shot has everything with the light, the shadows, the colour and composition!
