Ski Fever

Our Autumn Colours have yet to arrive here in the UK, but just now my mind has skipped Autumn and I’m already looking forward to Winter. Winter means Skiing and the ski trip is now booked.

We’re headed back to Zermatt. Again. Beginning to lose count of the number of times we’ve been there in Winter and Summer but this is either visit twenty or maybe twenty-one.

There’s something comfortable about the familiar: the journey is straightforward (accepting flight delays), the hotel cannot be faulted (Parkhotel Beau Site), the scenery is superb, and the skiing extensive and varied, and the snow is guaranteed. What more could you want from a holiday destination?

It’s a while since I posted anything remotely related to the great outdoors. I’ve been mining a rich vein of other images that have come my way in recent weeks, but today, for all those who essentially followed my blog for the landscapes from high places, here is one from last winter.

The image above is of the mighty Monte Rosa that straddles the Swiss-Italian border and is one of the many peaks that encircle the Zermatt valley. Wreathed in cloud it becomes mysterious, but the summits just peek above the clouds.

Thanks Edith. Sadly the trip isn’t until March – and that sounds a long way off. Might just sneak off in Jan myself, deends on the weather and a few other outstanding events in the pipeline.

Great shot, Andy. I don’t look forward to Winter as you do. It’s a lot of work and sometimes uncomfortably cold. But it can be very photogenic.

Thanks Ken. I know what you mean. It’s so nice to get away to somewhere just as cold if not colder (!) but where someone does all the work and looks after us very well and where I can put on all the layers needed to stay warm and go and have a ball being repeatedly carried up hill only to go down the hill fast on two planks of wood. ‘Each to his own” as the saying goes.

What an interesting sky to add to the beautiful mountain scenery. With combinations like this it’;s easy to see why you keep going back.

It is clear why you keep going go back there Andy. The scenery that you post from there like the one in this post is the perfect reason. Since I was able to post this, ignore my earlier tweet.

  7. Absolutely breathtaking scene, Andy!
I recall many of your other high altitude shots from snowy places and this ranks with the best of them. I don’t ski but can see why you continue to visit this grand location.

Thanks Jimi. When I can’t ski, life will be a lot less fun. Despite having to Switzerland so many times, I’m sure I’ll manage to come away with a few more snowy images this winter.

  8. I so love all your work from this part of the world. I honestly don’t see much from here, so your shots and posts are a real highlight for me, Andy. We really hope you guys have a terrific time skiing and we look very much forward to seeing your photographs, my friend.

Thank you so much for that comment, Toad. We are very fortunate to be able to make trips to the European Alps twice a year. They are the highlights of the calendar. Got a while to go yet before we are out there. Just returning from a trip to the Lake District with a whole load of Autumnal images.
