This morning we awoke to thunder echoing round the mountains. It’s rained all day and mists have cocooned the village blotting out the world beyond. The rain has only finally stopped in the last hour.
The camera has been forgotten and instead I have spent some of the down-time doing a few B&W conversions of some of the images taken on my recent walk to the Britannia Hut.
There is something special about B&W photography and the Alps. Images are reduced to the essential contrasting tones of white snow and dark rock. Images feel purified, simplified; the starkness of the medium is in keeping with the intensity and harshness of the mountain experience stripping it back to its bare primitive beauty.

Nice images Andy. There is such a scale in these especially when you show how small the people in the images look.

Thanks Len. As you know I don’t often include people in shots like these. But on that day they really did serve a purpose of introducing scale.

The snow looks as if it is flowing. As in, moving! These are superb, Andy!

The black and white reveals a lot of horizontal banding, at least in the things you choose to photograph. Interesting given that the mountains are such vertical places.

‘Banding’ seems an inherent feature of many mountains and its that stratification (and of course light/dark tonality) that make the mountains so suitable for the Black and white medium
