It’s mid June and so far we’ve had a mere handful of warm sunny days. In less than a week’s time it will be the longest day and then the evenings will draw in on the long descent into gloom and……Christmas. What a grim thought.
So, I’ve banished miserable thoughts of a wet summer spent in the UK and my mind is focused on our two-week holiday in Switzerland where, please God, we will have some typical old-fashioned Alpine summer weather. This year we are giving Zermatt a miss and hopping over the mountain range into the neighbouring valley – Saastal. One of a number of beautiful valleys that snake south from the main Rhone valley. At the roadhead at the end of Saastal, a four hour walk will take you to the Monte Moro pass into Italy.
The main resort in Saastal is Saas Fee village that sits on a high shelf (a classic hanging valley) above the main valley floor backed by the fabulous Mischabel mountains. If you drop back down to the valley floor and walk up the opposite side from the village of Saas Almagell you will come to Almagelleralp from where today’s image was taken.
This is the view back across towards Saas Fee (hidden) and the Mischabel mountains. Click the image to see an enlargement. The highest point in this range is the Dom, 4545M (14911ft) – Switzerland’s highest mountain. (Click here to go to the first in a three-part post written about the Dom and my ascent of it). This is a majestic view but I often think that photography in the mountains can never convey size – you have to be there to appreciate the true grandeur of scenes like these. But hopefully in a few weeks I will be sitting outside this mountain restaurant enjoying a beer and maybe lunch, bathed in warm sunshine and taking in this view. Not a bad way to spend a day!

An awe inspiring view well captured. I bet the beer tastes even better with this view!

Yes Len – stunning is the word. The Valais Alps with Zermatt and Saas Fee in neighbouring valleys has the greatest concentration of 4000M peaks in the whole of the European Alps. The scenery is spectacular. You must visit one day

My parents are currently staying in Interlarken in Switzerland. The first time they went there me and my sister went to. I have been to Switzerland a few times now, it is a beautiful country.

Thanks Lucy. Switzerland is my favourite country. Lost count of the number of holidays I have spent there. I know Interlaken and the other well known places in the Bernese Oberland well. I learnt to ski in Wengen which is not far from Interlaken

This looks idyllic. What a place to sit and enjoy a beer.
It does make me wonder though, which poor schmuck has to carry in the beer barrels, looks like it could be a long haul, even for a very fit person.

Idyllic is a good word for it. I can’t remember accurately but a lot of these huts can be reached by four-wheel drive vehicles. Alternatively a lot of huts in the Alps – all the high ones certainly – are supplied by helicopter. Adds to the costs of course, helicopter supplies don’t come cheap

That is slightly disappointing. I was picturing sweating giants with a barrel on their backs, or at least a pack train of mules. Helicopters! Oh well.

Great pic Andy – I remember walking up that very valley! The Saastal’s a beautiful area and possibly a bit quieter than Zermatt. I definitely recommend the Monte Moro walk if you’ve not already done it.

Thanks Pete, good to hear from you. I carried on up to the Zwischbergen pass, well worth the extra distance. Been to Monte Moro too – a little spoilt by finding so many Italians in flip-flops who had made the journey in a Cable Car! Saas Fee is quieter than Zermatt and all the better for it, I think. And now you get a free pass in Summer to all the lifts (and buses in the entire valley) including Mittel Allalin. Now that’s not to be sneezed at!
