Over the past few weeks I’ve been putting together a presentation titled ‘High and Wild with a Camera’ which I will be giving to a local camera club and which, subsequently, will be available to any other interested club within a reasonable distance. One of the enjoyable aspects of this work has been uncovering images in my Archives that I had completely forgotten about. And I know from reading other people’s blogs that this is a common experience.
Life will have been grim for many of you reading this who live on or inland along the Eastern seaboard of the USA and you have my deepest sympathies. My wife’s niece and her family live in Connecticut and so we have had a very personal reason to be concerned as Hurricane Sandy has caused such appalling destruction, flooding and power outages.

So, I hope that today’s image of a spectacular Alpen Glow on Mont Blanc may lighten up your lives a little. This is the view from Chamonix. The glacier whose tongue reaches down toward the valley is the Bossons glacier. The summit of Mont Blanc is the rather unimpressive distant snow hump dead centre (6.2miles away). It’s flanked from the left by the slopes of Mont Blanc du Tacul and Mont Maudit, and to the right of the summit are the two small humps on the Bosses ridge, and then the Dôme du Goûter.
When we stay in Chamonix, we stay in the Richemond Hotel – a delightful old-fashioned hotel close to the centre of the town, run by a charming family who we have got to know well. This image is the view from the balcony of our bedroom. Could you wish for a better view than this?

It certainly lights up my day Andy. We made out better than a lot of the CT – we lost power for only 20 hours with no damage. The images from the storm are unbelievable. I am also transplanted from NJ and spent a lot of my youth on the Jersey Shore. Tough to see.

Andy this is a terrific view. That is bad news about your relatives’ house. Unsafe must mean some very severe damage and that they will be out of their home for a long time.

That is indeed a stunning view from the balcony. And you have captured Mont Blanc in beautiful way. Such delightful light. I have for a long time wanted to go skiing somewhere in the Alps. Maybe Chamonix and the Richemond Hotel is the place to try out this season?

Many thanks Otto. The Richemond Hotel is a simple bed and breakfast hotel. Old and delightful, run by the same family for generations. The front bedrooms overlook the Massif with fantastic views. Skiing in Chamonix is scattered over a number of areas which are a little dislocated from one another. There is also the famous Vallee Blanche ski run, and a lot of off-piste.
