Fields of Gold

Fields painted golden yellow, blue skies, and a hint of green. That’s the  great combination created by a field of Oilseed Rape (Brassica Napus) on a fine day. Sadly we haven’t had enough fine days this Spring to provide opportunities to go hunting for that elusive landscape that ticks all the boxes. But to give the plant credit, the cool weather this year does seem to have prolonged the flowering season longer than is usual, and there still may be time. On the other hand, maybe not!

In an earlier post – ‘On a showery day’ – I was out scouting some nearby fields for potential images, very early in the season. Click the link to take a look at that post if you missed it.

On the one sunny day last week, as well as catching up with all the gardening chores that also wait for a fine day, I found a field that came close to providing the type of image that I was searching for and here it is.

But that is the only image so far from this year that is really worth showing when the fields are at their best. Last year yielded the image you see below – one that I enjoyed catching.

    I’ve seen a lot of views like this around Kent but haven’t yet managed to photograph one. Great shots. love the last one.

      Thanks for commenting. These images are really hard to find in my experience. Plenty of yellow fields but often one-dimensional. I look for a field with a tree that helps to break up that ocean of yellow.

    Lovely contrast between the blue sky and those Rape. As you mention, you did well to capture these gorgeous fields with a blue sky and sun as it has been a pretty horrible spring so far.

    I love the first one particularly, did you use any color filter on your lens? or was it just a little under exposed?

      Thanks Leo. No, there was no colour filter used. It’s difficult to remember all the little adjustments, but I am sure I did adjust the saturation of the sky a little to get a deeper blue to contrast with the yellow of the field.
