Fire in the Sky

Yesterday afternoon driving home we were treated to an exceptional, fiery sunset. Stuck on a dual carriageway with nowhere to stop, I was despondent that by the time we reached a suitable point where we could turn off and find something remotely appropriate for foreground interest, the light would have gone.

Thankfully I was wrong, and I got some shots. These two are probably the best.

Photographs never seem to do full justice to events like this. Nothing, except our eyes, can capture the full scale and grandeur of sunsets that can be such a visual feast. It’s a long time since I’ve seen one around here that’s had colours quite as dramatic. Enjoy this one.

Wow great color Andy. Like the silhouette of the trees, they really stand out. Don’t you just hate it when you can’t stop for a picture? Lucky that you were able to find a place to grab these.

Impressive colors! So many times I’ve been stuck on some back-road with no vantage point or even a place to pull off the road and been forces to view a magnificent sunset through my rearview mirrors.

Sunsets are indeed difficult to capture – at least if compared with the real thing. It’s just so much bigger out there when it covers the whole horizon. But what can we do – as photographers? A gorgeous sunset like this one, is just too good to not be photographed. But still one have to find a good vantage spot, which is always hard to come by from a car. But you did really good. You were able to capture the mood and the intensity of the moment. I particular like the first one, it’s a little more subtle than the other one and it’s just amazing how the trees seem to be on fire.
